Indian education system for an inspired student

India has been known as a famous seat of learning for centuries. We have prided ourselves as a nation which offered universities like Nalanda, Takshila, Vikramshila etc. to the world. Even today, we have IITs, IIMs, NITs, ISB etc. which have proven as the centres of excellence in the field of education thoughout the world.
Having glorified the past and illuminating the present, I am still left with an ever nagging question in my mind. Do we as a nation produce enough inspired students? If yes, then where is the inspiration to the nation as a whole? and if no, then where lies the reason for it?
Let us analyze the current education system prevelant in India.

Literacy rate in India is still at 69% with females having a lower than average literacy rate. Pre-primary education in the country is not a fundamental right and hence has a very low enrollment figures.  Primary education lags far behind the desired level and the dropout percentage below the age of 18 is quite high. As a society have we evolved enough to attach proper improtance to education as whole?

Having written about the state of affairs concerning education at all levels, I would like to talk about the quality of eductaion and the values being offered in Indian educational system. We all have gone through the same routine of reading the same text books, mugging up the same answers, passing the same exams and in turn learning the same things. Are we learning or just getting to touch the boundaries of something as vast as learning. Is it education or learning we aspire to have?
To be continued....
